Benjamin Clough, 1791-1853, arrived in Ceylon with the first mission in June 1814, and stayed until 1838. He published a grammar of Pali in 1824, and the first edition of this dictionary in 1830. A new edition was felt necessary because "the book has for many years been out of print and copies have been obtained only at very high prices." As Clough had died in 1853, the work of preparing an enlarged edition fell to the Reverends George Baugh and particularly Robert Tebb. It was revised for the press by Bartholomew Gunasekara, Mudaliyar of the Colonial Secretary's Office. Special care was taken to expand the number of terms included for Ceylon's flora and fauna. A new feature of this edition was that every Sinhalese word was rendered in Roman as well as Sinhalese script.
