Chater, James A Grammar of the Cingalese Language. Colombo printed at the Government Press, by Nicholas Bergman. 1815
First edition pp.141. A very good disbound copy of the text block lacking the 10 preliminary pages (pp.x: title, dedication leaf, preface & errata). Some contemporary annotation.

The first English grammar of Sinhalese and the first substantial book printed in British Ceylon. Although the British had taken Ceylon from the Dutch in 1796 it was some years before a printing press was set up. The earliest known printings of this period are Government documents and Regulations printed from 1811. The Ceylon Calendar was printed in 1814. Nicholas Bergman became Head Printer in 1815. It is likely this was the first book to be printed under British Rule in Ceylon.
